When We’re Not Writing

Hi, I’m Cindy Kirk and although I know this section is titled “When We’re Not Writing” I thought it might be fun for you to see where I write..  First how I keep track of my deadlines.   Yeah, a white board.  I’m real high tech.

A little history first.  I started writing in 1996 and sold my first book in 1999.  For those first few years, my “office” was a corner in the bedroom. The computer was on a lower shelf (not a desk) and on the shelf above it was a dot matrix printer.  When the paper came out of the printer, it would either A) fall on the floor, B) fall on my head or C) I would catch each sheet.  Ahhhh, the good old days.

Shortly around the time that I sold, we did some home remodeling and what should have been a spare bedroom became my office. I’ve included several pictures for your viewing pleasure.  The first is my computer.  You’ll notice the laser printer to one side.  It prints SEVENTEEN pages per minute and NONE of those pages fall on my head.  I consider this exceptional progress.

When I moved from the corner to the spare bedroom-turned-office, I decided my book covers would be my office art.    Thankfully I continued to sell (30 sales and counting) or my walls would have been pretty bare.  I also keep a copy of all my books, including all the foreign editions in a bookcase in my office. If you have eagle eyes and notice all the children’s books…yes, I have a collection of books from my childhood.  They never fail to make me smile when I see them.  So many good memories.

I’ve got a good amount of desk space when it’s not cluttered with papers and post-it notes that I write to myself to remind me of different points in my current work-in-progress.

Unfortunately some of my desk space is taken up by my office cat, Oreo.     I wish I could say she’s a big help, but she’s really more of a hindrance.  She sits in front of my monitor, sprawls on my papers and kicks my notes off the desktop.  But I love her anyway.

What I really like about my office space is it feels like home to me.  I can sit down at any of the day or night and do what I love to do best…write.  It doesn’t get any better!

When I’m not writing, I love to travel, read and spend time with family and friends.  Family includes Oreo and our other animals…. Leo, a white cat with a raccoon-like tail who came onto our acreage and never left, Shug, the blue heeler someone dumped in the country and Ernie, the Shih Tzu with one blind eye.

Hi there! I’m Helen Lacey, and when I’m not writing I’m usually found out in the paddock, with my many horses. Animals, and horses in particular have been a passion of mine as long as writing has, and I was fortunate that my parents indulged this passion when I was young. I got my first horse at twelve and have adored them ever since.

Thankfully, my husband is also a horse enthusiast, and together we own eight horses, three dogs, three birds, a spoilt Birmin feline and a house cow named Ginger.

This is Zeb, my 17.3hh Thoroughbred, whom I adore to pieces.

He had a long career on the race track, a stint as a showjumper and trail horse and now he spends his days munching grass and taking the odd ride on the beach with me.  I also own the most awesome dog in the world. His name is Barney and he is a Dogue De Bordeaux (you know, like in Turner & Hooch). And Ginger the house cow is pretty cool too. What I love about writing for Special Edition is that I can incorporate my love of animals into my stories (In fact, two of the horses in my January release Made For Marriage, were actual horses that I have owned over the years) So I’m sure Zeb will appear in a book in the future. I think it was Churchill who said the best thing for the inside of a man or woman was the outside of a horse.

I think he was right.

I’m Special Edition author Stacy Connelly and when I’m not writing or hanging out with my dogs, I like to pretend I know how to garden. :) Flowers and plants only, no veggies.

I actually think I do okay, considering I live in the desert and keeping anything green over our 115 degree summers is an accomplishment. The picture off to the right is a planter my mom and I built. The tiny plants are what it looked like when I first planted them. The picture below is what they looked like the following year. (Unfortunately, the snapdragons haven’t come back this year, but the two bushes on either side are now HUGE.)

This past year, I did another planter/garden in another part of the yard. (See the picture below.) It was kind of supposed to be a rock garden, but the plants in the front are quickly taking over. That’s okay, though. I love these plants because they will survive the summer and come back year after year–even after transplanting them to their new “home” in this planter.

Last month Christyne Butler decided that the sixty to ninety minutes she spends each morning surfing the world wide web while sitting on her butt in a chair would be better spent standing up…and moving! She looked into Treadmill Desks, but oh, boy, the prices! But then she was inspired by a blog she found about a $39 desk so thanks to a $9 1.5′ x 4′ x 3/4″ White Melamine Particleboard from Home Depot and 1 piece of $9 4′ x 8′ x 3/4″ pink Styrofoam panel that sits directly on the arms of my treadmill, she was all set to go for only $18!

She is ending her fourth week using the treadmill daily (except for 4 missed days and three were part of a long weekend!) and so far she’s walked over 60 miles! She’s averaging just over 2 miles a day and she is finding out when she misses a day she really notices it! She is now walking across America (thanks to Google maps!) starting at Fenway Park (home of her beloved Red Sox) with plans to track her path until she arrives at Coronado Beach, CA (one of her favorite places in the world!)  Stay tuned for updates!

When Lilian Darcy isn’t writing, she can most often be found acting – not very effectively, as she is somewhat afraid of horses – as her daughter’s groom and general helper at competitive riding events.

Recent successes in the groomer/helper role include cooking dinner for seven on a one-burner camping stove and reversing the horse trailer (which we call a “float” in Australia) into the space beside the house with no one on hand to say, “Left! Another half a metre!”
