I’ve always been a fan of the astrological signs that are determined by one’s birthdate. For me – I’m a Cancer/Moonchild. I like to read my daily horoscope and I find myself sometimes amused and often surprised at just how spot on the descriptions can be.
For Cancers it’s said that those falling under this zodiac sign form the sentimental lot. They are of a loving and a caring nature. They are cautious in their actions. They are very protective towards their loved ones. This nature makes them excellent and caring parents. Cancers often have an imaginative and artistic side to their life. They are subject to varying moods. Their overly emotional nature needs to be worked on. On the whole, they are good human beings. (Note: there are hundreds of websites that provide insight into zodiac signs – this description is courtesy of http://www.buzzle.com/articles/personality-characteristics-of-signs-of-zodiac.html )
Yep, that pretty much sums me up.
As a writer, I will often assign a zodiac sign to my characters as a way to discover more about them and their personality. Or sometimes, the zodiac sign falls into place because of the storyline. In THE MAVERICK’S SUMMER LOVE, I had already planned that my heroine, Shelby Jenkins, gave birth on her 17th birthday, just a few weeks after the end of her junior year in high school. That meant Shelby was a Cancer/Moonchild (like me!) and yes, she is a very loving, yet young mother and after a few hard knocks over the last couple of years, a bit cautious about everything from her job prospects to trusting a man.
My hero, Dean Pritchett, on the other hand is a Pisces. Now, that is the sign I specifically chose for him. The reason? Cancer and Pisces are both water signs – very compatible. And that’s what I thought Shelby needed instead of someone opposite her type (although falling in love with someone like that can be fun and exciting too!)
The description for Pisces at that same website states: They are sensitive and sympathetic. They are kind and helpful. They can go out of their way to help their dear ones. This makes them excellent friends. Opinions of others can easily influence them due to which they can easily get carried away. They are not very determined or courageous. They are often vague in thinking and behavior. But their idealism is their true differentiator.
Hmmm, not sure I would say Dean is easily influenced because he never lets the gossip about Shelby get to him and while he isn’t necessarily determined or courageous (at least not in the Alpha kind of way) he is sensitive, sweet, very caring and an all-around nice guy. In other words — the perfect guy for Shelby.
Like I said, sometimes it’s fun to pair up two astrological signs that are total opposites (in my October book, FLIRTING WITH DESTINY the hero is a Virgo while the heroine is a Pisces – completely different personalities!) or like the book I’m working on now that will be out next year, the hero and heroine are both born under the sign of Leo and because each of them embody the best characteristics of the lion; proud, regal, relaxed, and in charge, the fur is flying!
