In my last post, I wrote about simple pleasures, and I decided to turn the tables this time around. Each summer, I get sucked deeper and deeper into the television show Big Brother. I love the voyeurism, the twists and turns, the unfolding of interpersonal relationships and conflicts. It’s a true guilty pleasure, but aren’t those the best kind? Somehow summer feels like the best time for self-indulgence like this, when the weather is warm and the long, lazy nights lend themselves to relaxing on the deck and maybe not bothering to cook over a hot stove. However, I realized that my list of guilty pleasures is quite long and extends far past Labor Day.
So let’s dish, shall we?
Reality TV I am a fan of all things Bravo. Ninety percent of the shows on there I watch, especially anything with high conflict. Then there is Big Brother, of course, and The Amazing Race, which is the only one I would ever considering trying out for. Oh…and then there is The Bachelor/Bachelorette. The list is quite long, actually… Don’t get me wrong: I love high-quality, well-written traditional programming, too. But I wouldn’t classify those shows as a “guilty pleasure.”
General Hospital I’ve been watching since I was too young to know what was happening. I’ve grown up on that show. Thank heavens above it has survived all these soap opera cutbacks! (I may have signed a petition.)
Cookie dough Give me the batter over the end product any day.
Small dog clothes When my pups were smaller, I couldn’t resist. The best was a sweater vest small enough for a hamster, that fit my smaller pup when he was only about 10 weeks old and weighed in at a little over a pound. I have gotten better. I mean, I know dogs don’t need clothes, per se, so I now limit their wardrobe to holiday and birthday attire, Halloween costumes, and cold weather protection. But sometimes, I just can’t help myself.
Cheese Need I say more?
Daydreaming Well, this sort of comes with the territory of being a writer, but the guilty pleasure kicks in when you start daydreaming at inappropriate times. What can I say? Sometimes inspiration just strikes…
Pajamas One of my favorite things to buy for myself is a new pair of pajamas. I probably shouldn’t even admit this, but there are times when my daughter and I change into our pajamas as soon as we get home from the school pick-up at three. We fondly call it a “pajama party.” What can I say, I like to be comfy, she likes her princess nightgowns, and I can only hope my husband isn’t reading this…
So how about you, what are your guilty pleasures? I certainly can’t be the only person who eats raw cookie dough in her pajamas whilst watching soaps and surrounded by her dressed-up pooches!
